About
Our Program.

The Smart Project, established in 2019, is a free

Dallas-based youth creative art program.

Our program for 8th – 12th-grade BIPOC students who deserve equal resources provides them creative lesson plans that focus on technology-based learning; such as offering photography, digital media, and foundational traditional visual art techniques for the interactive arts. Creative inspiration has been drawn from teachings and support methods from former Pearl C. Anderson art teacher Mrs. Grisby, programs such as POD, and community centers such as the SDCC.

Our Founder

Meet Nitashia Johnson, our visionary founder. Hailing from Dallas, Texas, Nitashia is a multimedia artist who creates bodies of work that invoke change. She serves as a photojournalist and digital media specialist, harnessing the power of art to make a difference in the world. Despite facing adversity growing up, she found inspiration in art and mentors, driving her to empower others through The Smart Project, an after-school program for North Texas youth.  â€‹

Our Mission

Students will prepare for their college and career experience by giving them the tools needed to succeed as artists, designers, photographers, and creative writers. We believe that all students are capable of achieving success in their chosen field of study.

Art programs in public schools are disappearing and it is despairingly affecting BIPOC schools. Studies have shown that art should still be implemented in classrooms because it impacts students in positive ways.

We strive to ensure equitable access to various resources, including developmental classes centered on photography, digital media, and traditional visual art techniques. Additionally, we offer creative teaching opportunities to assist students in developing their skills and building a portfolio for future careers in the arts.
